Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a huge Carole King fan and that her album, Tapestry, is one of my all-time favorites. To say that I was excited to see the Arsht Center performance of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is an understatement. My expectations were high and the production did not disappoint. Casting, music and the story line were all impeccable. The willingness to share King's successes as well as her disappointments provided another reason to love Carole King even more.
If you want to be transformed to the sixties and enjoy great music from that era you must see Beautiful. You will be surprised to know that Carole King and her husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote many of the songs that you bopped to. My favorites include You've Got A Friend, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Natural Woman, Some Kind of Wonderful and One Fine Day. Groups like The Drifters, The Shirelles, and others gained musical success at the pen of Carole and Gerry.
For the evening I was transported back to the dorms of Florida State University where in my youth, the songs from Tapestry could be heard throughout the corridors. If you want to feel the earth move under your feet you must see Beautiful.
